Virtual Colonoscopy

A virtual colonoscopy is a non-invasive, safe and more comfortable procedure for colon screening. The virtual colonoscopy scan takes hundreds of images of the abdomen and pelvis, which are then used to perform a computer generated, 3D reconstruction allowing doctors to take a virtual tour of the colon.

Benefits of VC
  • A virtual colonoscopy does not require the insertion of a scope into the colon.
  • A virtual colonoscopy takes less time than either conventional colonoscopy or lower GI series.
  • Sedation and pain relievers are not needed, so there is no recovery period. A patient can drive and return to regular activities after the procedure so there is no need to bring another person.
  • With a virtual colonoscopy 100% of the colon surface can be seen as opposed to only 70-80% with a conventional colonoscopy.
  • A virtual colonoscopy provides a clearer, more detailed images than a X-ray using a barium enema, sometimes called the lower GI series.
  • A virtual colonoscopy substantially decreases the risk of perforating the colon.
  • Elderly patients, especially those who are frail or ill can tolerate a virtual colonoscopy better than a conventional colonoscopy.
What to Expect

Patients must still prepare for a virtual colonoscopy by cleansing the bowel the day prior to the procedure. We use a standard laxative kit (ez2go) that is available at our office or local pharmacies. Instructions for colon preparation will be prescribed upon scheduling of the virtual colonoscopy.

Exam takes about 7 -10 minutes.

What Happens After the Exam

The digital information is gathered and stored. It is sent to a computer for 3D reconstruction which allows the doctor to “fly through” the colon. The image can even be turned around to allow viewing behind folds and other structures.

Your doctor will inform you of the results. It is recommended to have a virtual colon exam every five years for screening purposes, usually after age of 50.

Your doctor will discuss the future intervals with you depending on your individual results.

Virtual Colonoscopy Candidates
  • Patients over 50 years of age.
  • Patients over 40 with a family history of colon cancer.
  • Patients who are poor candidates for sedation.
  • Patients who have failed conventional colonoscopy due to tortuous colon or other reasons.
  • Virtual Colonoscopy is less expensive than traditional colonoscopy allowing more patients screening capabilities.
Colon Cancer Statistics
  • Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the US.
  • Colon cancer has a cure rate of over 90% when it is detected early.
  • Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer in the US in both men and women.
  • Each year more deaths are attributed to colorectal cancer than from breast cancer and AIDS combined.
  • Starting at age 50, men and women who are at average risk should be screened for colorectal cancer.
